Scent / Detection Dog Training

Scentwork, or detection dog training,  is an engaging and rewarding activity that allows dogs to enjoy a hobby perfectly suited to them – using their incredible sense of smell. With an olfactory system that is estimated to be between 10,000 and 100,000 times more powerful than ours, dogs truly thrive when given the chance to use their noses.

Watching a dog search an area for a hidden odour is endlessly fascinating. Seeing how they move through the space, read the scent, adjust their body language, and follow the trail back to source never fails to leave us in awe.

At Puppy Plus, we offer a range of scentwork opportunities, including daytime and evening classes, weekend introductory workshops, and scentwork training days held at a variety of interesting venues. We also offer specialist training on indications, search patterns, clearing areas, buried, and high and inaccessible hides.

Scentwork is also used to complement our other courses, and we offer one-to-one scentwork sessions too. These are fully bespoke and tailored to your individual needs, whether you’re just getting started or looking to refine your handling, searching skills, or indication work.

Some of our clients go on to attend trials, while others simply love the experience of training together and watching their dog’s sheer enjoyment of the sport. Dogs of all ages and all breeds are very welcome to take part.

Both Emma and Katie are City and Guilds qualified Detection Dog handlers and Instructors with The College of Scentdogs. Both are also able to assess Odour Recognition Tests on behalf of the National Nosework Association and are Trial Officials and NNA Judges also. They both compete in Scentwork UK trials, Nosework Games and NNA Trials with their own dogs with an excellent level of success.

We hold regular Nosework Games and Scentwork Trials at the barn. We also offer NNA Trials at different venues, from schools, to football stadiums, to farms and museums.

Nosework Games were set up to provide a skill based nosework competition that would enable teams to compete and be tested on foundation skills. These games help build skills and progression in training.

Scentwork UK offers various progression levels, with gradually increasing difficulty, introducing new odours and more complex searches at higher levels.

The National Nosework Association aims to provide handlers and their dogs an opportunity to compete in nosework challenges in different and challenging environments. There are various levels to work through, with badges and skills awards to collect.
